Johnson & Johnson"s (J&J) Tibotec has warned physicians that its HIV drug Intelence [etravirine] has caused severe skin reactions and liver damage in patients taking the HIV drug. The FDA has added information about the side effects to the drug"s labeling and cautions physicians to cease treatment if these side effects develop. Some cases of Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a life-threatening skin disorder, were among the reports. Tibotec issued the updated warning following two severe reactions including a report of a death from toxic epidermal necrolysis and a report of liver failure in which the patient recovered. The drug"s labeling has always included warnings about serious skin reactions since it was launched last year.
