The Obama Administration is said to have excluded the possibility of allowing the government to directly negotiate lower drug prices under Medicare or require certain additional price rebates in its healthcare overhaul according to an email sent by Jim Messina, a White House deputy chief of staff. The White House is seen trying to keep a delicate balance between the industry and liberal supporters as it continues negotiations. As a cost saving measure, Henry Waxman"s (D-CA) Energy and Commerce Committee proposes to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices for the government"s "Part D" prescription-drug benefit for senior citizens although it is unclear whether this would save the government money.
