The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted in favor of allowing 12 years of market protection to high-tech drugs used to combat cancer, Parkinson"s and other deadly diseases adding the amendment to broader healthcare legislation making its way through Congress. Mr. Obama and some Democrats, including the energy committee chairman, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) hoped to give patients faster access to cheaper generic versions of biotech medicines therefore reducing the country"s healthcare costs.
