Scientists in the Netherlands used mosquitoes as flying needles to deliver a "vaccine" of live malaria parasites through their bites. According to the paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine everyone in the vaccine group acquired immunity to malaria, those in the non-vaccinated group developed malaria when exposed to the parasites later. The authors said that the study showed how whole parasites can be used like a vaccine to protect against disease. A vaccine using parasites that have been weakened by radiation therefore hopefully keeping them in an immature stage in the liver to generate immunity but not cause illness, is being tested at Maryland-based Sanaria.
