According to a study, published in the May issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, an immunosuppressant and a cancer drug are comparable in the treatment of lupus nephritis. For the study, 370 people with lupus nephritis were randomly assigned to monthly intravenous infusions of the cancer drug cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Neosar) or to tablets of mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept), an immunosuppressant. After 6 months, 56% of those taking the immunosuppressant and 53% of the group taking the cancer drug had responded positively to the treatment, indicated by kidney function tests; 15 people taking the immunosuppressant and 16 being given the cancer drug were in complete remission.
