Research investigating the bacteria that cause urinary tract infections (UTI), published in the journal PLoS Pathogens Feb. 20, has discovered two siderophores, which enable E. coli bacteria to steal iron from their hosts resulting in their survival and reproduction. The discovery could lead to the development of antibiotics that eliminate pathogenic E. coli strains without harming beneficial bacteria in the intestine.
