The FDA announced on Feb 9 that it was stepping up efforts to reduce unsafe use of 24 narcotics products, such as methadone pills, fentanyl patches and slow-release pills containing morphine derivates like OxyContin. Products that are classified as schedule II narcotics are already restricted, but the current rules have failed to eliminate abuse and accidental overdose. The new program will focus to educate doctors about appropriate prescribing of the products and may require doctors, pharmacists, and patients to register in order to get a new prescription each month.
