According to reports in the Global Update, the Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine (BCG) which protects against tuberculosis and is routinely given to 75 percent of the world"s infants, is too risky to give to those born infected with the AIDS virus. It is a live vaccine, a weakened strain of bovine tuberculosis, and can cause fatal disseminated BCG disease. In countries like South Africa where TB and mother-to-child transmission of he AIDS virus is common the vaccine offers almost no protection against TB. The World Health Authority suggests delaying vaccine until babies are tested.
