According to a study, to be published in the New England Journal of Medicine, capecitabine works against breast cancer that has spread, but does not prevent the spread of early-stage breast cancer. During the study, which included 600 women given capecitabine after surgery to remove the tumor, women aged 65 and older were twice as likely to have the cancer return and die than those assigned to intravenous chemotherapy.
